Description

Cover dated July 1998. Done on Duo-Tone board.

When I was in college in the mid-to-late 1990s, it wasn’t considered “cool” to be reading super hero comic books. Vertigo books? That was something else entirely, at least in certain social circles. I’ll admit that I bought into that mindset a little bit. While I never stopped buying super hero books completely during that period, I enjoyed the darker, more mature books that DC’s Vertigo imprint was putting out. I particularly liked the “Vertigo Visions” one-shots that appeared sporadically, with Tomahawk by Rachel Pollack and Tom Yeates being a surprise that seemed to pop up out of nowhere. While I haven’t read it in over 20 years, I was excited when this page turned up on Heritage not too long ago. I figured that since it was a 1990s Vertigo page, I may need to pay a pretty penny for it, but I guess my nostalgia for the book was stronger than most others, as I got this for a lot less than I expected.

Yeates’ artwork on this book was perfect for Pollack’s story. It impressed me in 1998, and it impresses me now.

An original page from a book that meant something to you, a memento of your youth, and paid a lot less than expected? Just perfect! And a nice one as well! :)

A romantically charged work where the superhero uses her powers of persuasion to ensnare his heart.

I've always been a big Tom Yeates fan and I've never heards of this. So had I noticed it at auction, I would've guessed based on the subject matter alone that the winner would be coming away with this for a double digit price, regardless of it being from Vertigo. You're right about Vertigo having been considered more "highbrow" than mainstream superheroes in those days, but that popularity has still always been confined to very specific titles. There is a ton of Vertigo titles whose art has little if any demand and can be had very cheaply. But that's what's great about this hobby. Even in an era of most art becoming unaffordable, there is still enough art that remains cheap as long as you're not narroly focused on the pages always having to have superheroes in action in every panel.

Agree 100%.  In fact, if all goes accordingly to plan, I'll be talking about the inexpensive art part on Sunday night.
