“Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicle” by Mark Russell. Art by Mike Feehan, Mark Morales and Paul Mounts. This is a book that should not work. Mark Russell takes the Snagglepuss cartoon and turns it into and examination of a closeted gay playwright as he lives his life in New York City during the Red Scare. A wonderful, poignant expression of the medium of comics. Russel’s writing is sublime. Snagglepuss’s dialogue is beautiful. Feehan, Morales, and Mounts storytelling, inking, and palette is spectacular. Easily one of if not my favorite comic of the year it came out. When I saw these pages in Mark Morales portfolios at Baltimore, I snatched them up as fast as I could. So happy to have pages from such a beautiful work.
