Description

Cover dated September 2000.

Black Widow flashes back to Deodato’s first run on this page that combines the talents of Perez, Ryan and Vey. The Busiek/Perez years were a wonderful time to be an Avengers fan, with incredibly solid super-hero tales with great characterization that captured what these heroes were all about. This book was always on top of my reading list back in the day.

This is the tail end of their run and Perez gave it his all to cement his lasting legacy on Marvel and the Avengers!  This piece has all the great Perez team book staging to give so many characters a spot on the page and their great detailed images!

I left comics for 7 or 8 years and when I came back, I'd found out that Pérez had returned to Marvel and recently finished a run on his return to the Avengers. I was excited and always intended to read it, but never did. But now that you talk it up as well as you did, Michael, I'm feeling I may need to finally read this! Congrats on the acquisition.

If you enjoyed 1970s and 1980s Avengers, then you'll like the Busiek/Perez run.  Solid action stories with a dash of melodrama with art by arguably the best superhero artist of the 1980s and beyond.  Even the fill-in artists, which included Jerry Ordway, were top notch.  That being said, I read these monthly when they were new, so I'm basing this off of memories from over twenty years ago at this point (it pains me to even say that it's been that long).

Man you got a nice assembled crew of characters here. I see Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver (in plaid??) and Madame Masque. Great find, Michael!

I took a look at Avengers #398, which is the issue that Black Widow was flashing back to on this page, and yes, Quicksilver was wearing plaid in that issue.  In fact, those were the clothes he was wearing while boiling spaghetti to serve to Wanda.  Which, of course, leads to the next logical question - where the hell was Jarvis that Quicksilver had to do the cooking?

I'll say this for Alfred - you never see Batman making his own pasta.

Don't tell Doc Ock about this guy. He's gonna be pissed! Perez was so awesome on his Avengers runs. One of the first comics I remember as a kid was that fantastic Ronin issue. I was hoooked from jump street. He has such a distinctive way of setting the page, and it's very evident here with his layouts. Cool score. Congrats!

Crazy thing is, the character with the tentacles debuted during a two year period where Doctor Octopus was dead.  If Otto had been alive, he surely would have taken the guy down for copying his style!
