Description

Collecting Blondies, cont.

I got the call back on Sunday evening. Since I knew exactly what the dealer had paid only a day before, and since the prices he quoted to me were way out of line, in my opinion, I decided to do something I had almost never done before -- negotiate over the prices. He told me that he would think about my offers and get back to me the next day. That Monday I had to start a medical malpractice trial, and, I'm a little embarrassed to admit -- not really -- that I had a hard time concentrating on jury selection and such due to the stupid Blondies. That evening I heard bac from the dealer, who told me, "Well, the Blondies are going to someone else." What the...he didn't even give me a counter-offer and he said it was too late for me to offer more. That was it for bargaining, as far as I was concerned ... it took me years to get over that trauma!

But, although I thought I had now lost out on four hunger strike dailies and another first-rate Blondie by Raymond because of my arrogance in thinking no one else would buy Blondies for prices I considered too high to pay myself, everything ... and much more ... worked out for me in the course of the next few years. Success at collecting can be as much a matter of patience as it is simply being willing to pay the big bucks. I once told someone that I had lost all respect for that "any fool can spend money"; which is a bit embarassing to admit, even though it's true.

I soon learned that the purchaser of the three Blondies was Jack Gilbert, who was flipping them to the ultimate collector, whose identity was still unknown to me. I had heard of Jack, although I had never met or spoken with him. He immediately went on my "enemies" list for his impertinent involvement in depriving me of Blondie originals, even though he surely had no idea that I even existed. I remember sitting behind Jack and the other offending dealer (the one who didn't have the good sense to persist in trying to sell three Blondies to a local collector who would have paid him in cash) at a Sothby's auction in New York some years later. Darts were figuratively flying out of my eyes toward both of their backs throughout the session, and, after it was over and I had bought what I went for (one of my best Barney Google dailies), the dealer handed me his business card. On it was written information about another Google that he had for sale [sure, after I had just paid the record price for one and the dealer realized that maybe he could make some money off of me]. Fat chance, I never responded. To wrap up my dealings with that dealer, a few years later he had another hunger strike daily, one of the worst [the one shown above, for January 12, 1933, actually], for which he was asking $2,000.00 [perhaps thinking that I might be interested]. I was, of course, but I wasn't going to break my boycott of him. So I waited a while, just knowing that no one would buy it for that price -- and, for once, I was RIGHT!!! Knowing that even he woud figure out that there was no place to move the over-priced Blondie, I then sent a friend over, who bought it for me for $1,000. And that ended my interactions with a dealer who had the nerve to disappoint me years earlier -- kidding, sort of. Continued....
