Description

For my money, Kurt Schaffenberger produced the purest version of the DC house style in the 60s-70s: clean and precise, but grateful and expressive as well (with Curt Swan perhaps tied or a close second). Maybe not quite as much personality in the work as Infantino or Kane, but achieving a sort of perfection. Like most good comics art, it looks best in black and white. From "The Super-Initiation of Supergirl!" in the Feb. 1968 issue, Action Comics #359, Mort Weisinger editor.

The sweet silver age charm dots this piece with lovely images that Schaffenberger crafts with a warm feel. There is no mistaking how special they treated their characters to make them beloved by the audience.

What a beautiful page! I think for fans when we think of a character there will be an artist and style where we will always go first in our mind's eye as to who that character is and how they look ... and for me, for Kara, she will forever be Schaffenberger's Supergirl. I think this may be true for many silver/bronze age fans and if you don't see why in this page and appreciate it, especially in the two panels you chose to highlight, then there is nothing more to be said.
