DescriptionHere's a striking cover by Bill Sienkiewicz for The Iron Manual #1. Subtitled "The Ultimate Operations Handbook of the Golden Avenger's Armor," the Manual was a complete guide to everything you might want to know about Iron Man's armor in comic book format. It had no storyline, instead offering extensive technical and tactical details about the design, features and weaponry of various versions of the armor. For the cover, Sienkiewicz borrowed the design of a famous Leonardo Da Vinci drawing titled "The Vetruvian Man." It's a drawing that has been used for everything from art prints to drink coasters, but to my knowledge this was the first times it was ever used for a comic book cover. Da Vinci's drawing showed the proportions of the ideal man, while Sienkiewicz's version showed the proportions of the ideal IRON Man. It's an clever idea, perfectly executed. And considering how fascinated Da Vinci was by the technical designs of everything from tanks to submarines, I think he would have approved. I'm delighted to add this Sienkiewicz masterpiece to my collection.Social/Sharing |

Only one artist could have had the balls to pull this off back in the day. Sienkiewicz was a trailblazer and was instrumental to open up comics to larger influences. He not only opened up arts, but also for writers as well to tread into new ground.

This is excellent work from Sienk, congrats Bill! I love seeing homages/tributes to DiVinci's famous Vitruvian Man imagery across other types of art and pop culture, if this is the first one ever done in comics then that's so awesome!

The technical difficulty of this does not appear that it was easy to do, but Sienkiewicz sure makes it look like it was! Just stunning. However it's not Halloween related so therefore you are officially disqualified Bill! :)

Your pick ups never cease to amaze me! Sienkiewicz doing da Vinci's Vitruvian Man with Iron Man! Sienckiewicz is usually known for his kinetic raw feel but this has the techinical look as the title implies. This is so amazing my friend, congrats!

Bill, you found and acquired the original Vetruvian Man by DiVinci?!?!? Wow, this is incredible! Did you notice how much the style on this classic actually resembles the style of modern master Bill Sienkiewicz? This is outta sight! I love the fact that when you look at it in just the right way, the man even looks like he's wearing different armors, making it appear as if he's actually Iron Man! I guess that must explain why the previous owner had it mounted to a sheet of Marvel bristol board. Congrats, man, incredible!

Even when it's a canvass of cold metal, Sienk delivers a masterclass. Doing Da Vinci proud!

Loved Iron Man as a kid and remember picking this up. I didn't remember Sienkiewicz drawing the cover to this. Great addition to the best gallery on CAF

Now, that is a cool one! And a rather unusual one for Bill Sienckiewicz who avoids his usual expressionnist, highly volatile, style in favor of a clearer, more classic approach that perfectly suits the concept! Bravo for this great pickup!

After seeing this remarkable cover, I wish we had gotten more work by Bill Sienkiewicz on Iron Man. The callback to Leonardo da Vinci is just brilliant. Bill was in peak form at this time and you have a great piece. Congratulations!

Of course you would pick probably the most iconic covers by Sienkiewicz to add to your astounding collection. I love this image so much! It was a brilliant idea to adopt Da Vinci's Vetruvian Man to an Iron Man cover, and as you say, perfectly executed. BRAVO! And Happy Halloween!

Vitruvian virtuosity, and a clever solution from Sienk on how to mash up thirty years of Tony's armor variations in one image. Nice pick up!

Wow! While I've seen some vitruvian man homages before, I don't recall having seen one where multiple versions of a character were incorported & overlayed in the pose. This is fantastic, such a unique take on the design. So very cool. Congrats!
