DescriptionMore Native American superhero art! 1st of 2 today. Here, John Proudstar aka Thunderbird, who alas only made it on one mission with the new X-Men before meeting his untimely demise. Nice turnaround shots here by the great Keith Pollard – definitely an underrated artist IMO. And I’d be remiss not to also mention the ink assist by Mr. Joe Rubinstein. His costume, not surprisingly, definitely played up the Native aspects, and though a tad overt, I still dug it. His legacy lives on with younger brother James aka Warpath, who I felt toned down the look a bit since, to strike a nice balance. I particularly like his X-Force look. Whether John or James you gotta have the eye mask and long hair – that’s the staple! I remember reading somewhere that Claremont/Wein decided Thunderbird would be the X-Man to die because he overlapped too much in terms of characterization with Wolverine. They were both no-nonsense, gruff, authority challenging, North American guys. Tough, but I guess I get it. That Wolverine guy ended up doing alright for Marvel :) And I recently found out that Thunderbird was actually resurrected in the pages of X-Men – we’ll see how that goes! I hear there’s lotsa X folk coming back in those books right now. Characters do come back from the dead from time to time, right? In any case, I’m excited to check it out, and excited to have this art! Social/Sharing |

I too remember reading in an interview that Claremont/Wein decided Thunderbird would be the X-Man to die because he overlapped too much in terms of characterization with Wolverine. But I think we both know it was just another case of ignorant white men "slaughtering the 'injun'" in order to perpetuate the idea of the powerful, white Canadian! 😡

This set of Thunderbirds are go! Pollard's definitive takes on these characters give them a proud legacy no matter what their status is in the handbook.

Some of the OHMU pages can get a little samesy, but this one stands out. Congrats!

Always loverd the Thunderbird costume. Pollard for his part can do no wrong. Marvel Universe was a favorite for kids everywhere and the great art that went into it had a huge role to play in it. Congrats!!

Thanks, man! OHOTMU rings a nostalgic bell for many of us. So cool reading the character background info (you got some real bang for your buck with those "comics") and I remember inspecting the looks and costumes. In large part due to great renditions by artists like Pollard, who I agree, can do no wrong. Still looking for a nice piece featuring Black Panther from his one issue of Jungle Action and I think I'll be set. And a great FF page. Wait. Forget it ;)

Oooh great Thunderbird original art from the oh mighty Handbook. I feel like he's going to be making a big splash in the books again soon, seems to be some good energy around him as he was just resurrected.

Thanks, James, I'm looking forward to it! Been a little tough staying up on reading the new books but I'll definitely see what's up with John Proudstar being brought back. Glad you like the art!

I remember as a kid wondering why Marvel was publishing a handbook with all of the characters posed as if they were in a police lineup. That being said, I love Pollard's art and was a big fan of Thunderbird from the first issues of Classic X-Men that I read off of the stands as a nine year-old. The supplemental material in those issues did a great job presenting the character, although I was confused as to why he wasn't able to turn into a bear like he did in the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends cartoon.

"The Usual Suspects", lol, yep, totally see that :) Glad you also like the art, AND the character! And yes! I was a Spidey and his Amazing Friends fanatic as a kid, and it was definitely cool seeing the X-Men show up. But yes, bear transformation wasn't a power T-bird had - guess they had to play him up some for the show? In any case, Marvel just had to poke some fun: https://youtube.com/watch?v=2PlaURThRCk&feature=share. 0:45 in. Thanks, Michael!

WHAT? Dead characters coming back to life? That NEVER happens in the comic books! Haha! Really cool Thunderbird character study here. Keth Pollard should get much more acclaim than he does, cuz he is always so solid. Really interesting description too, K, thanks for sharing this one!

Totally agree on Pollard, Paul, and glad you like the interesting description - something a lil' different, y'know? Variety is indeed the spice of OA life :) Thanks for the great comments, as always!

I heard that nostalgia dinner bell a-ringin'! OHOTMU was a huge favorite of mine as a kid. I wore those comics out. What are his powers? How much can he bench press? Does he even lift, bro? It answered all my questions. :) These Pollard turnarounds from the update were really cool. I think I remember reading that these were drawn on blank templates to help more with standardizing size and placement after the Delux Edition? Super cool find. Congrats!

Superb! I think what's also appealing about these character designs it's rather nice for the artist to be able to draw something static for a change and really dial in the details. The finish is key. Congrats!

Looking back on it now, it was certainly a very 70s costume design but, honestly, I loved it then and I love it now. And Keith Pollard is not only a superb (and, yes, undervalued) artist but a heck of a nice guy as well.

Great piece! Thunderbird's uniform is one of the earliest, and all one of the best, ways to do superheroes without trunks.
