The second page to the story which I find offers various interesting artistic points.

First we have some really cartoonish art which differs from Lightle's usual more realistic style. Such as the bad guy's face (and his victim to a lesser extent), the shadow of the Flash in panel 5 (close to Tex Avery-esque)and his body position in panel 6. Those are almost renditions that you would almost expect in splastic humor titles (Not Brand Echh and Mad come to mind).

And then you have a much more realistic approach, especially in the deep black inking which looks as if applied to any regular realistic job. Just look at the swat guy and the shadows on the clothes. This makes for a very interesting combination. That's a bold experiment that only an experienced artist could have tried and pulled off.

Panel 3 is my favorite by far. All characters' body language is on point and the Flash doesn't look as cartoony. Animated, certainly. And the backgrounds are so rich.

If you pay attention to all the characters' expressions throughout the page, they are perfect.

Angry then surprised hostage holder, stressed then relieved victim in panels 1 and 3.

Then the other gun guy, the veteran swat guy and the "a job well done" Flash in panel 6.

Then the layouts. 6 panels and room to breathe with clever use of the margins. And again, it reads effortlessly even without any text which is the ultimate test/proof of great storytelling.

A fantastic page from one of my favorite 80s artists. Lightle's more cartoony work was jarring at first but I think he eventually achieved a synthesis between it and his original style.

As you know, I'm far more partial to realism than cartoony, especially if an artist whose work I love is the one purposely using a completely different cartoony style, but I admit there's something special about seeing an artist have the ability to change their style to something so radically different. Even my pal Mike Perkins shocked me with a cartoony short story of The Thing and Annihilus he did for a Marvel Holiday Special back in the mid 2000's. Also, I suppose the fact that I hung onto this Lightle story for aropund a decade before parting with it is proof that even I can find things to appreciate in art styles that I don't typically enjoy seeing.

And that's why he's The Flash. The gun disappearing is a perfect flash moment, and I really like how Lightle handled the speed action. The shadowy Flash dragging the perp might be my favorite part of the page. Nice score. Congrats!

It was a fill in issue for Lightle. As penciller and inker, he was bridging Porter and Semeiks in 2005 in a one and done. And bridging Johns to Cavalieri in writing who probably wanted something of a lighter tone. The storytelling is still there and all the action still has the fastball max effort in high energy!

Stunning page by Steve Lightle! Love all the different angles Lightle uses here! And like you, I'm surprised by the cartoony style he uses in some panels. It's a really cool page!
