Description

McClure isn't often mentioned in discussions of the top cartoonists in the realistic/illustrational style (Raymond, Caniff, Foster, etc.), but I find his skilled brushwork very fluid and appealing. In this strip, the stylish Miss Lee -- out of place in the dockside milieu -- is clearly the star, with expressive gestures in each panel, while the title character, Annie, is more of a witness (along with her dog Zero).

The lines are elegant and the gestures tell the story of Lee's demeanor in her dilema. Rooney takes a back seat, but still drawn with that wide eyed innocence to satify her fans.
