Description
I just caught up on the last 7 episodes of Superman & Lois yesterday, when (spoiler!) the 9th episode revealed an appearance by Superboy. Not just any Superboy, but the coolest of all the Superboys, Kon-El, who first appeared in Adventures of Superman #500. Now, I will say that it was a seconds long appearance only, but based only on that brief, on camera appearance, I can only say that they are trying to capture the spirit of the character, but I can't say I found it "impressive" looking. But I'll reserve judgement until they air episode 10 and we get a better look.

Either way, it's nice to see them trying to use the character in live action and in honour of that effort, I've chosen to post this cover today. The Power Company series was published in 2001, which makes it astounding to think it has already been over 2 decades since it was released. I've always thought that Tom Grummett's art was often maligned by matching him up with unsuitable inkers throughout his career, but thankfully there were a few who matched up nicely and although he only ever inked these Power Company covers, I've always felt Mike Bair was one of those suitable inkers. Some fans feel his approach might be a bit too slick for Grummett's pencils, and they certainly ARE slick, but that's his style and I'm in the camp who thinks the inks look great, as all of the finished covers to this series of one-shots are beautiful and really stand out. The nice thing about Bair is that while his inking approach may be naturally slick looking, he always tends to ink in service of the penciller, which is to say that he still follows the pencillers' lines closely so that the finished product still has the penciller's style clearly showing through. I would've loved to have seen what the Grummett/Bair team would've looked like in terms of storytelling, and given how much I love the Rags/Bair team on JSA and Identity Crisis, I think it would've looked great.

To all you Superboy fans out there, cross your fingers and let's hope he's used properly in the coming episodes of Superman & Lois!

Or Superboy and the Ravers!  They tried so hard with Kon-El

Hey Chris, personally, I prefer to breathe. But by all means, feel free to hold your breath if you feel Striker Z's live action appearance is imminent!  😄

Grummett and Bair were not an obvious match from a theoretical pov but they indeed matched well.

Bair's more heavy inking approach is more visibile in the Kirby crackles background here (and the jacket and glasses maybe?) whereas he did great service to Tom by approaching the characters with a more lightle touch.

Regarding Tom's drawing, I find that the composition of the 3 figures, while busy, works quite well with all the drapes.

Great one!

The inks on the Kirby Krackle is mesmerizing, as is the hair, and the glasses ... and then the cover - that's amazing too. This is a visual feast for the eyes! Congrats Ruben - thanks for sharing!

The initial Power Company one-shots were a lot of fun when they first hit the stands, as it was Kurt Busiek taking on DC after a very successful stint at Marvel.  I felt the ongoing series itself never quite found its footing, but the art by Grummett was always top notch.  Love the cover here, as anytime Grummett draws his Superboy, its magic.

Wow!  The inking on this is just insane!  I especially love how flowing and delicate it is in the bottom half of the drawing.  I don't have any Grummett art, and I'm not actively hunting for one, but I would buy this in a heartbeat.

Great cover full of flair. I like how the original art extends all the way to the edges of the paper (lost in publication).

Congrats!

Wow, I think these inks are incredibly stunning!  And yes, Bair definitely services Grummett's pencils and artistic style very well. Love how Superboy looms over the characters below.  Stellar cover!!

Wall to wall slick inks are my jam! I didn't read your first paragraph, because I'm going to binge that series in a few weeks, but I disagree with anyone who says these inks doesn't match Grummett. I'm with you, it looks fantastic. I'm getting hand cramps just looking at his page. And Kirby Krackle! The red speed force lines are the cherry on top. Great cover. Congrats!

This is beautiful, Ruben!  I LOVE the inks and all the textures on display here; I think this is one of the "prettiest" Grummet pieces you've posted in a while!  The Krackle is outstanding, and provides a very kinetic foundation for the rest of the image to springboard off from.  Great, fluid inks on the scarves of the attackers, and the central image of Superboy is really striking.  Yeah, man - I'm totally onboard the Grummett / Bair train!  Woooooo-whoooooooooooo!

Yeah, Grummett and Bair was a great combo here. The dance of the fight, with all the robe lines, is just lovely.

Man, I really dig this one.  Nice composition with the large Superboy in the background, and the smaller battling characters up front.  Some killer pure illustration, too!  FINE lines, accentuated by Bair inks.  I always thought Bair was a bear (pun!) on inks - his work on Sleepwalker still wows me.  Also...some Krackle in the back to take it up yet another notch!  Congrats, man!
