Description

I had initially set out in 2021 to purchase one Garfield comic strip original art completely done by Jim Davis, but got caught up in the bidding excitement and accidentally won a 1980 strip instead. No problem, I still ended up with a strip I found funny. I tried my hand again this year and was able to land the only piece I had eyes on for that auction! Would have loved to snag a Sunday instead but figured weekday would be more in my budget.

I know many roll their eyes at the Garfield comic strip, but it was a huge deal to kid me. While older pieces do command higher premiums than later art, most Garfield collectors seem to be going for first appearances, holidays, character appearances, etc. as opposed to whether it's pure Jim Davis or not. And that's what I love about collecting what you love, there's no wrong way :)

Also, if you squint your eyes, that mailman kind of looks like Lyman :)

The non Davis ones are probably more recognized as the ideal version of Garfield that the mainstream recognizes. I guess if you were actually wowed by Jim Davis as an artist instead of being a storyteller, it would matter. There's pluses and minuses both arguments.
