Wait a minute. Royle was asked to draw a cover featuring NINE female characters, with one of them being Phoenix. So he made sure that Phoenix was the smallest figure, all in silhouette, way at the back?!?

Or she is the biggest - given the flaming eyes in the background?

The ads for this back in the day were all hinting that the Phoenix Force was going to make one of the Ultraverse characters in the foreground its new host.  I'm assuming they were front and center to draw readers into all the potential hosts.

The only full-page ad I remember seeing for this back in the day was 80% Phoenix Force, with only a few of the would-be hosts, so I'm assuming in the end the editors agreed with you and felt the Phoenix should be front and center.

Weeeeeeell, the flaming bird is technically "The Phoenix Force" isn't it? Like the source of her power, so to speak? While Phoenix is the tiny little woman in the back of the room....in silhouette. Though in fairness, the Phoenix Force is so large that if it has to be included on the page, I suppose there's really no way to do it AND drawing Jean at a much larger size, cozying up to the bevy of beauties in the foreground, looking like they're going to a slumber party for the ages!

amazing piece. the ladies in the foreground would be a home run piece alone but the phoenix in the background puts this over the top. congrats Mr Miki
