Collecting Blondies, cont.

The new development which threw a monkey wrench in my Blondie collecting was the emergence of an auction house as the major force in the comic art marketplace. Sotheby's and Christie's, after several years of holding dedicated sales of comic books and comic art, discontinued their auctions of such material. After years of having pretty good success at buying several types of art at major, well-publicized and attended auctions in London, New York, and Los Angeles, I wasn't doing so well with the auctions put on by the new player in the comic field. And I was doing particularly badly when it came to Blondies. My major failure was in connection with a hunger strike daily. I had known of its existence when it was owned by a woman in Florida, but no dealer had been able to get her to sell the piece -- not that there was any demand for Blondies in general. But this was one of the hunger strike dailies which was high on my want list. So I was happy to see that it had been consigned to this auction house which was moving into comic material. I shouldn't have been.

When it first came up for sale in 2006, I believe that I bid on it but gave up when the bidding exceeded the highest price ever paid for a Blondie, whether a Sunday or daily, with the exception of what I paid for the first daily and, perhaps what I received for the second one [not sure of the date, probably 2007 but I got about $11,000 for it vs. the $20.912.50 that this same company reported that they received when they subsequently sold it in 2008]. The hunger strike ended up selling for more than $5,000. Although it is fairly uncommon for items sold at auction to turn up again within just a few years, the hunger strike daily was again offered for sale in 2010. Since it is even more uncommon for the a purchaser of an item at auction to consign it for sale without a reserve which is at least somewhat close to what they had paid for it, I didn't bother to bid on the Blondie the second time around. It sold for EXACTLY 1/3 of the price it had sold for at the earlier auction -- $1,752.50 vs. the $5,377.50 that was reported when I actually had bid on the piece in 2006. Within a couple of months after the second auction, the same hunger strike daily was posted on the CAF page of one of the principals of the auction company which had sold it both times. There is another instance where a strip of interest to me was sold twice in a short period and then ended up in this same owner's private collection. Because of these developments and other reasons, I stopped bidding with that company for several years, during which time the company offered a few additional hunger strike dailies. Two of those were each offered in two auctions, both in 2006 and again in 2009 and 2010, and were reported as having sold in every instance. More recently, one of the strips from before the hunger strike, for 28 Dec 1932, which looks just like many hunger strike dailies since it also shows Dagwood in a hospital bed, has sold three times, November 18, 2017, February 23, 2019, and August 3, 2019 for $3,824, $3,360, and $2,640, respectively. I don't know what the odds are that three hunger strike dailies would sell under such circumstance, but I don't intend to bother bidding on any in the future if they turn up in auctions by that company.
