DescriptionYou can see this along with Alex Ross's painted interpretation of the character in the new Dave Cockrum biography:https://twomorrows.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1680 This character design was created while Dave was working on the Legion of Super-Heroes. Quetzal was intended to be a member of a group called the Outsiders, who would guest star in the Legion. You can click the "Additional Images" to read Dave's description of the character. Other characters intended for the Outsiders included Nightcrawler, Trio, Typhoon, Reflecto and Power Boy. While Quetzal, Trio and Typhoon never did appear in comics, Dave re-used elements of each of them when creating Storm. He based Storm's face on Quetzal. Storm's powers came from Typhoon and her cape came from Trio. This has been part of my collection since 2008. While technically unpublished in comic book form, this was printed in the X-Men Epic Collection Second Genesis book in 2017. Social/Sharing |

Cockrum is probably the best character and costume designer for comics ever. He works in primary colors that really pop because of the printing limitations of his time and when he designs a team, the characters all stand out from each other without clashing.

What a great, unique piece of Cockrum history. He's as well known for being an amazing and prolific costume designer as he is for co-creating the New X-Men, so pieces like this are pretty special, in my estimation. I also LOVE that the character notes survived. Nice to see it in the collection of the hobby's foremost Cockrum art collector!

Next to Jack Kirby, Dave is probably the best character designer that comic books have ever seen. I love seeing pieces like this from him.
