Chew #1, Page 18

I must start by sending a Mason Savoy sized thank you to James S. for this page! Have to admit that when I first started collecting comic art, I never would have imagined that I would be adding a page from the first issue of Chew to my collection. Chew was actually one of the books that pulled me back into comics after a hiatus, so this page definitely has some personal meaning. I remember being blown away at how interesting the concept of the series was. It was honestly the first book in awhile that I found hard to put down. I even went as far to acquire a first printing of issue #1, completing the whole run. At that time they weren't outrageously priced, but they were still somewhat hard to come by. So a page from #1 is something that I will truly cherish. It's even signed by the Mighty Layman and Rob Guillory!

This page is part of a defining number of events in the first issue and we see Tony Chu here face to face with sous chef and just discovered serial killer, Tracy Lee Cobb. Tony used his powers to identify the serial killer a couple pages before this and the discovery leads to his partner being injured, along with an ending at the bottom of the page that is less than ideal. However, on the following page Tony makes a quick, thoughtful, and downright wild decision to use his cibopathic powers and get the exact information that he needed! The moments before and after this confrontation immediately make you root for Tony Chu and his partner John Colby for the rest of the series.

Guillory's panels here help create a tense moment with the zoomed in shots focusing on the weapons and their locations. The details on the faces also really help convey the seriousness of the situation. Then in the final panel, we get a resolution. Overall, makes for a well illustrated interior page that effectively tells the story and properly captures the confrontation.

A big thanks to James again, he was even kind enough to throw in one of his limited edition CAF Avatar prints, signed by Rob Guillory...Can't believe I have a page from Chew #1.
