DescriptionSergio, through the Aragones Cartoons FB page, has been offering up Groo pieces in the unique 3" x 17" format. One of the quintessential Groo images for me is when he inadvertently but unavoidably sinks ships. When this piece was offered, I immediately got it too. When you think splashes and boat debris, it is easy to think of Sergio drawing rubble and noodling them mindlessly like his barbarian creation. It was quite the opposite. All the parts Sergio drew were from the boat and much thought was given to them. All lines were purposeful and represented a part. They aren't quite as obvious in the black and white line art, and it also explains why Sergio adds light blue pencils in his commissions so that the owners can make out what those ink lines indicate. But when I attempted to digitally color them and decipher each line, I was just in awe. How was Sergio able to put all the broken parts of the ships in a paper size that small? We are talking 3"x17" or 51 square inches of real estate! One bonus was when I shared my digital colors in the Groo FB group, I got a message from Sergio's daughter Christen that Sergio himself colored it and was impressed. I guess that is enough to make my day, my month, and even my year. I am sharing my digital colors in the additional images section, and also a picture of Sergio holding the art. **** UPDATE 1/5/2024 **** I just added a an updated imaginary cover for this piece: slightly changing the colors, adding color holds (as this is what the new colorist Carrie Strachan does), and using the latest Dark Horse Groo logo. Enjoy! Social/Sharing |

Another excellent pick up! Love the photo too. Your coloring is definately impressive. maybe you can apply to work on future projects with the master.

I like how the blues of the water and the sky have their own distinct values. Subtle, but a little more sophisticated than at first glance.
