Man, he could do SO MUCH with so little! Even 5 minute head sketches were incredibly expressive, as this one shows. As one of the greatest artists ever to work in the field of comic book illustration, an original Joe Kubert should be an absolute MUST HAVE for any collectors who focus their collections by artist.

Pieces like this are exactly what makes this hobby so much fun for me. Whenever I see these types of wonderful informal drawings by true masters and comic legends (especially those who are no longer with us), I just get so excited. For most of us, prime published example would probably be out of reach. I mean, it’s not like I woke up today and said, “I think I’ll buy a nice Ditko Spidey page.” So as collectors, we usually resign ourselves to just admiring legendary artists in other people’s collections. But with pieces like this, you don’t have to feel left out. It may not have cost as much as that cover in the other guy’s gallery, but it was drawn by the very same hand. And it’s certainly every bit as beautiful (and precious). I can’t even tell you how much I love this drawing. Congrats buddy! You got a real gem here.

Very nice thin pen work from that era. You can see all that energy and personality Kubert is chiseling out to make Tarzan as steely eyed and determined as possible.

In my CAF live interview, I spoke about Joe's rendition of Tarzan and how fantastic it was. Great piece!

Wow - fantastic piece, Rick! Love the regal nature of Tarzan here, as the King of the Jungle surveys the landscape, looking for trouble... Love the shading here, and how Joe uses it to frame Tarzan's face so effectively. Awesome signature, too. :) Another great pick up, Rick! Congrats, my man!
