DescriptionNew Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #221, pairing Batman with the Atom, in a Bambos Georgiou-drawn cover adapted from Captain America #131, original art by Marie Severin and Joe Sinnott.1949 - and when Robin is injured while on the trail of his long-time enemy The Clock, Batman vows to bring the villain to justice. A re-examination of the clues gathered by Robin leads Batman to Calvin College, where he looks up his old JSA team-mate (and current PhD student) Al Pratt, aka the Atom. Pratt is part of a team working for the National Bureau Of Standards on the first practical atomic clock - which both he and Batman realise is an obvious target for The Clock! With the press conference announcing the switch-on of the timepiece planned for the following day, both heroes determine to spend the night guarding it. However, in the early hours a series of alarms are set off, leading Batman and the Atom to respond to them - and Batman spots the fleeing figure of The Clock and gives chase! The villain lures Batman into a soundproof testing laboratory, and the doors slam shut, trapping the Gotham Guardian within - and The Clock triggers his "Chimes Of Doom", a concerted sonic attack which leaves Batman unconscious... The following morning, the Atom is worried - despite searching the entire college grounds, he's been unable to find Batman, and was unsuccessful in trying to persuade the authorities to delay or cancel the unveiling of the atomic clock. At shortly before noon, Al Pratt arrives at the site of the ceremony, only for the Clock to appear and reveal Batman, strapped to a giant clock-face - and to declare that at noon precisely (as measured by the new atomic timepiece) a bomb will not just destroy the new clock but kill Batman! Although Pratt can see that Batman is working to try and escape the trap, he ducks into a nearby laboratory, swiftly changes into his costume, and then leaps into the fray as the Atom! His newly-acquired atomic punch rocks the villain back on his heels, and the Atom then frees Batman - but once that's achieved, Batman turns his hand to defusing the bomb, saving the atomic clock as well as the assembled crowd, while the Atom chases down, knocks out and captures The Clock! Real-world note: the first practical atomic clock was indeed completed and unveiled in 1949, but in Washington rather than Calvin City --- and no super-villains (or super-heroes) made an appearance! This one went through a few iterations before I settled on this pairing - the presence of a giant clock did initially suggest using Hourman, but as the second heroic figure is small, that pushed me towards potentially co-starring a sidekick (I had plans for either the Star-Spangled Kid or Dan The Dyna-Mite) before settling on the JSA's shortest member - and The Clock, a recurring Robin foe from Star-Spangled Comics, was an obvious choice for the villain as well as inspiring the basic plot (Atom + Clock = atomic clock). This'll be the last B&B cover for 2022, but they'll return next year, and if my plans hold, the first few months should see Batman teaming with - in no particular order - a Soldier Of Victory, a Freedom Fighter, a JSA-er, and an otherwise-unaffiliated All-Star Squadron member, as well as more than one guest-star in the second B&B Annual. So great with the classic giant ticking clock motif! Batman being in the death trap is also a classic trope! 2023 sounds like it'll be another banner year!
