DescriptionGeneration X … the third generation of mutant students … first the X-men , then New Mutants and now Generation X . The new new students. Wow this book is a nostalgic home run for me. 1994 was a long time ago now but for me I was graduating high school and embarking on the next faze of life .. and Xavier happened to have a brand new group of mutant students embarking on there journey… such a great concept.. a grizzled veteran X-man and the newly reformed White Queen running a school of brand new characters . This is the book I also took notice of Chris Bachalo’s art … it was incredible and perfect for the title.. a bit of a departure from the marvel X-men norm but so perfect for this team. This page from issue 1 , a full on battle between Synch and Skin really highlights what makes Bachalo great.. the unique panel structures , cartoony yet some how gritty features and play on lights and darkness. Buckingham does a great job bringing it to life with the perfect inks. and for you first appearance buffs.. issue 1 gave us our first appearance of the Generation X team.. Chamber and Penance… talk about a keeper page!Social/Sharing |

It was that silvery glossy metal cover that you couldn't resist off the stands! While cartoony, Bachalo's work for the early issues were immense and dark with heavy patterns and black ink borders on that slick paper stock that made their uniforms resemble patent leather. Very much in fashion at the time. His artwork looked like nothing else on the stands at the time and was perfect to exude that outsider mentality of the Generation X youths.

The first couple of years of this title may just be my favorite mutant books of the 1990s. Great characters and great art, all of which is on full display here.

I love the layouts on this page. How do you even describe it? Most of a box, then a circle, then some kinda rectangles? Super creative.

It's cool seeing Bachalo's evolution from the earlier books to now, and when I think "earlier" it's Gen X #1 that comes to mind first. So many winning pages/images, including this one! Love this panel layout and storytelling flow here. Congrats!
