It was really out there as one of the early Spawn spin off miniseries that achieved a prestige level as it had paints direct over pencils. With Grell's name attached, it was great to see Spawn interpreted that way with a touch of class. Of all the things, the lace garter belt got censored?
I remember feeling a bit of the Uncanny Valley effect while reading it, the paints over pencils were something completely new to me. It definitely added a touch of sophistication as you mentioned. Also as you mention, why the garter censor? Having now seen the pencils and compared them to the painting, I think if Rob Prior fumbled anywhere it was in the attempt to supercede Grells superior penciling, such as practically changing the entire middle panel which is night and day better in graphite.
Mike did some amazing pencil work on this mini-series.
Great page from a stellar title! Mike Grell's work is always so thoughtfully done and masterfully executed!
