I don't know if anyone reading this has had the great fortune to find a piece of art that is MORE stunning to see live than through a scan. If so, you'll understand when I say, as awesome as this page is to see here, it is 10 times MORE amazing in-person.
The only other example I passionately feel this way about are two Jonah Hex pages by David Michael Beck that were created in pencil. Scanned images just do NOT reflect the awesomeness of the art.
I mentioned this to Freddie after receiving the art and he replied,
"I just looked up David Michael Beck's Jonah Hex pencils, and they look awesome, very dimensional! Although I have not seen them in person, I think I know what you mean there is a lot of subtlety that is lost in a SCAN of art- sometimes photographing the page is better- but if there is a shiny service (a dense black ink- or shiny pencils) the camera will reflect and "Blow out" that area, in the photograph losing an even greater amount of subtlety than the scans do.
With David's work in pencil, and some of my art- it's created in layers, so you can get a sense of topography when looking at the originals- like where the paper has been built up, or compressed in the creation of the art- so it IS a different experience up close, than online.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Kevin Eastman, and looking through a lot of his sketchbooks, back in 2017- and he is merciless with his paper- just he really digs into the sketches with ballpoint pen, and whiteout so there is always a great looking sketch and a story of how it was created, you can kind of track the layers of decisions he may with many of the sketches."
If you are still reading at this point, let me encourage you to check out the sites for Mr. Williams and Mr. Beck. Be clever and wise by getting some of this gorgeous art so you can see for yourself how amazing it looks in person. And no, I am not getting a commission or kick-back or anything. I just think everyone should having something this awesome as a part of their comic art collection. And my experience from the time I ordered until the item was received was fantastic. Not something I can say about all my art collecting transactions.
