Description
That last panel is where it's at. Thomas and Martha Wayne lay lifeless on the ground as a young Bruce kneels over their dead bodies. He rises up never to be the same again. This image was used as the title page to the TPB and was also used many other times by DC comics.

Classic story "The Man Who Falls" written by Dennis O'Neil and illustrated by Dick Giordano. This 16 page story builds on elements from Detective Comics #33, "Year One" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, "The Untold Legend of the Batman" by Len Wein, John Byrne, and Jim Aparo, and other classic Batman stories. Christopher Nolan acknowledged that this story served as direct inspiration for his 2005 Batman Begins movie with Christian Bale.

Originally published in the Secret Origins of the World's Greatest Super-Heroes book from 1989. The story was later reprinted in the Batman Begins movie adaptation TPB in 2005 and was also published as a mini comic that was included with the Batman Begins DVD set.

One of my favorite stories retelling the origin of Batman.

It's to capitalize on the 1989 movie for sure, but made to stand alone and last the test of time.  No better artist than Dick Giordano as he had the credentials and the power within DC to get these plum assignments.
