Here's a bit of science fiction history. The first Hugo Awards were presented at the 11th Worldcon, held in Philadelphia in 1953. For that inaugural year, there were two professional artist Hugos -- Best Cover Artist and Best Interior Illustrator. Here's the Hugo Award that Virgil Finlay won that year for Best Interior Illustrator. The years have not been kind to it -- its lost two of its rocket fins, and it suffered quite a bit of smoke damage in a fire a few years ago. I'm not sure if my restoration folks can do much with something like this, but I'll take it in to them at some point and find out.

It might be better just to keep it this way and have a replica made. The history and the title itself in the record books is what makes this uniquely the first award.

Very cool. Many years ago, I put in a bid for a Chesley Hugo -- it was pitted badly because CB kept it in his bathroom(!).

Great piece of Sci-fi history. I'm sure there's a good pun here about the award that Finlay won has lost 2 fins.
