Description
Cover dated January 2003. From the feature “The Dumbest People, Events and Things of 2002!”

As of when I’m typing this, it’s been only a day since we lost one of the all-time great humor artists, the amazing Al Jaffee. I never personally met the man, but I’ve enjoyed his brilliant work since I purchased my first issue of MAD back in 1989. I was fortunate to attend multiple MAD panels at NYCC over the years, so I did get to see Al in person where it was clear that his mind was sharper than people half a century or more younger than him. For that, I consider myself lucky.

I also consider myself lucky to have a piece of original art created by Al. While MAD’s switch to color shortly before this issue appeared was controversial at the time, it meant we got painted pieces like this. And check out the crowd at the top of the piece - no space went to waste.

For an excellent interview with the legend himself, check out this article.

Jaffee was brilliant and unique, as well as a huge part of many boys' childhoods. But I'm happy to know he lived what by all accounts was a very well lived life. Plus, when you are fortunate enough to live 102 years in relatively good health, you gotta be happy about that. A great piece which reminds me of the constant figure skating scandals that permeated the sport for so long!

A beautiful piece to commemorate the life of a great man and artist.  I was so sad to hear of Al Jaffee's passing, but 102 years of life is nothing to skate at, I mean sneeze at.  Thank you so much for sharing.  :-)

Beautiful piece, Michael, commemorating the life of someone who, I'll wager, touched us -all- with his wit, humor, and skill.  He certainly makes "people watching" an Olympic event here...  Even with the incredible detail and time invested into that crowd, I think my favorite thing here is the sepia-toned panel of judges; some really subtle shadings (although it looks like someone out of The Far Side snuck in on the left there... :) ).  Thank you for sharing this piece with us to mark this occasion, Michael, and congrats on such a cool example from Mr. Al Jaffee.

(Do you ever get the temptation to fold it in, just to see if there's a secret message hidden somewhere?)

I used to try to figure out the fold-ins without actually folding them in as part of a misguided effort to keep my MADs in some semblance of mint condition.  Stupid, I know.

HA!  I (and, I'd wager, many others) would do the same thing!  Then, once I was sure I "figured it out", I couldn't -not- fold it in to see exactly how it would look... :)  Mr. Jaffee always got you in the end (and is probably the single biggest reason that the number of NM MADs is as low as whatever it is... :) ).

Back in the late 1990s I acquired a collection of around 40 MADs from the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Nearly every single one of them had the fold-ins completely folded.  Since this collection didn't cost me anything, I didn't mind that the condition of the magazines was far less than mint.  In fact, I was actually kind of happy that the fold-ins had been folded since I was able to appreciate them as they were meant to be appreciated without needing to overcome my compulsion to try to keep things mint.

For every Jaffee, have you heard, if humor's the game
Then paint stroke's the word
Don't skate with rhythm,
Don't skate with style
Russa thirsts for winnin',
Grab your vial uh

Hold your right hand out, give a firm handshake
Talk to me about Olympic break
Spread your gold bullion, both far and wide
Keep your contributions, buy Judge's side and

Jaffee, Jaffee
Could be a winner boy, you move money well
Jaffee, stroke me (stroke)
Jaffee, stroke these
Your water colors down
Jaffee, Jaffee
Say you're a winner but babe, you're just a sinner now

If Billy Squier had written music to accompany Al Jaffee art instead of making the video for "Rock Me Tonite," maybe he would have remained huge for all of the 1980s and beyond.

Wonderful art from a great artist! "The fix is in" isn't all that inaccurate. ;-)

.
I read how one reason that Bill Gaines enjoyed Al Jaffee's fold-ins was that collectors would often buy two copies of each issue: one to keep pristine and the other to do the fold-in.

That's a great anecdote about Gaines, and perfectly in keeping with everything I've read about him!
