DescriptionAnother new Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #227, pairing Batman with Johnny Thunder, adapted from the Jim Aparo cover of Phantom Stranger #39, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.1949: and as Bruce Wayne has a late lunch in Wayne Manor, his attention is drawn to a personal ad in the Gotham Gazette - "Say, you know I need your help, Batman. Meet me at 8pm tonight in the Big Ball Room. JT" -and immediately summons Alfred to change his plans for the evening, before heading to the Batcave, jumping into the Batmobile and driving off. That night, Batman - having decoded the crude cipher and realised that Johnny Thunder wants to meet him in the assembly area of the Perisphere, wartime headquarters of the All-Star Squadron (the "Big Ball") - is concealed in the shadows when his former teammate arrives. Determining that Thunder is alone, Batman emerges, and asks Thunder why he didn't simply get his Thunderbolt to bring him direct to meet with Batman - and the answer shocks him! Johnny Thunder recounts that recently the Thunderbolt has become less and less responsive - and a day ago, he discovered why. The Wizard, enemy of the JSA, has seized control of Johnny magical sidekick, and now intends to use him as a weapon to attack the JSA and other heroes! Unable to locate the Spectre, Doctor Fate or any of the other magic-users, Johnny turned to Batman for his advice. Before the Gotham Guardian can respond, however, the shadowy interior of the abandoned Perisphere is lit up by the arrival of the Wizard and the Thunderbolt! A spell from the Wizard knocks Thunder to the floor, and the villain tells Batman that he had found an ancient Badhnesian grimoire and translated a spell which gave him temporary control over the Thunderbolt - control which will become permanent when Thunder is dead, and another hero is sacrificed at the same time! Batman dives for cover as the Wizard launches an eldritch assault on him, and throws his batarang to try and knock the villain out, only for a spell to transform his weapon into a swarm of vampire bats, which attack him! A gas bomb disposes of that threat, but The Wizard commands the Thunderbolt to appear, and to attack and detain Batman! In desperation, Batman leaps towards the groggy Johnny Thunder, and tries to pull him out of the way as the T-Bolt attacks - but Johnny jumps between Batman and his magical aide! The T-Bolt pauses, unable to attack his former master --- and Batman takes advantage of the lull to hurl a nearby metal bar at the Wizard as a distraction. The Wizard tries to magically stop the missile, only to discover the truth of the old adage that cold iron is immune to magic - and the hurled iron crowbar knocks the villain out! With the Wizard unconscious, the Thunderbolt is freed from his control, and tells Johnny to bind and gag the villain (which he does, tearing his up plaid jacket to do so). The Thunderbolt tells the two heroes that the spell which gave the Wizard temporary power over him will wear off in less than an hour unless the villain can speak the magic words to renew it - and if it's not renewed, it will become useless to the Wizard forever. All the heroes have to do is stand guard over the villain until the spell is lifted, and the threat will be ended! Another new team-up - next issue! When I started working these covers out, and decide that I wanted to try and feature every Golden Age JSA member as guest-stars, Johnny Thunder was the one which I though would give me the biggest problems in finding a cover to adapt, so I was delighted when I stumbled across this Jim Aparo Phantom Stranger issue, which I thought worked very well (and provided me with the basis of a plot). Hope you agree! Social/Sharing |

Swapping in one Aparo image with another one of Aparo's signature characters is a natural fit! The solid black background is great to have us focus in on what's happeneing without distractions.
