DescriptionBanshee ** Olivia De Berardinis "Second Slice" Cover and May 1997 Heavy Metal Cover featuring late model Julie Strain. This is a smaller version (appears to be the FINAL "study" if you will, since Olivia seems to call almost every small painting a study if she created as a larger piece later). It is framed. These pieces are often 15" x 20" in size. That doesn't necessarily mean it is not a finished painting. This is a gorgeous Banshee. She has some beautiful studies out there.Olivia created her Final large Masterpiece at 30" x 40" , which ultimately became the covers for her book "Second Slice" and the May 1997 issue Heavy Metal and 1999 Heavy Metal calendar and so on an on. My smaller version framed here also created in 1996 painting was done in watercolor and gouache. Banshee is a grail for me. She is certainly one of not only Olivia but model Julie Strains's most recognizable images. I am forever grateful to get this small version. I have my heart still set on the final, but this comes in second best! I am the second owner of this painting. It was originally acquired from the Robert Bane Gallery in Beverly Hills. From Olivia's book about the painting" "Julie is right up there with Bella and Rhonda Ridley for me. These are my most animated models. I've painted them over and over again, for years, because they have great versatility, camera sense, and their personalities are strong. Julie has a large, aggressive cast of characters that I just play off of. She is my super-bitch-heroine-terminator. I had been sketching a predatory winged woman for a while and when Julie modeled for us again, I asked for this pose, which is actually a physically impossible position. We got close as we could, but what I had not foreseen was Julie's gift of a face for my creature. I manipulated the body into a lunging position. In ancient lore a banshee is a female spirit that wails outside a house as a warning that a death will occur soon. I wish all paintings would fall together so fast and magically as this one did. I knew where everything belonged. Maybe, I saw her in the neighborhood one moonless night." Julie: "The skeleton tattoo is what Olivia imagined a dragon skeleton would look like. Who could argue? I have a lot of Olivia art and open to selling several pieces NOT posted. I know where several are as well over my YEARS now of hunting so reach out if you are interested in some beautiful Olivia art. Social/Sharing |

Combines contrasts with soft and supple skin with razor's edge and needle sharpness, the gracefulness of her feathered wings and flowing hair with the rawness of her siren scream! All done in that Olivia fine finish that defies all descriptions.
