DescriptionI feel really lucky to have snagged a two-part Thomas Nast cartoon from Harper's Weekly, March 27, 1886. This was from Nast's final year with the periodical, and it feels glorious to run my fingers over his pen & ink line work. The cartoon is titled, "The Only Way to Have Them Above Suspicion". The first part is captioned, "Let us take our city officials direct from their natural home...", with part two captioned, "...and return them when their official duties have been performed." It's some pretty biting satire, that some might find relatable to some of today's politics.My thanks to Rick Marschall for giving me a time-frame to check through in Harper's Weekly. That made quicker work in going through the online archives. Of course when I received the artwork, I discovered all of the pertinent info written on the back. Rick also pointed out that the capitol building pictured is in Albany, NY. For those not so familiar with Nast's work, the popular version of Santa Claus is due to his cartoons, as are the creations of the Democratic donkey and Republican elephant. Nast also played a major role in taking down Boss Tweed. This is definitely now the oldest piece of American comic art in my collection. Social/Sharing |

Great detective work Rob! Had my eye on this one but was gun shy about bidding on it b/c I couldn't verify if it was published or not. Glad you found the source.

Thanks Hans. I really do enjoy the research end of the hobby. It helps bring some context to these older pieces. And with all of the archives online today, it makes researching that much easier.
