DescriptionThe Green Hornet was a successful adventure series that began on the Radio in 1930's and was wildly popular spawning later television and comic book series. In the 1940's a syndicated comic strip was considered and there were a number of artists that tried out for this. I have examples by two different artists in this gallery but I have heard of others. Syndicated comic strips had the potential to make the creators quite wealthy and so you can imagine everyone trying out for this golden sweepstakes ticket. Here Bill Ely did an admirable job. I have not see another original by Bill but if the rest of this work is anything like this...oh boy!Social/Sharing |

Great finesse in the inking to make the exteriors look photographic. The stretch and sleek contour of the Black Beauty shows off the art deco design of the era that looked towards the future. The only thing you can fault is that he tried to be too clever in the last panel with them running next to each other so close with Kato's two legs stopped and Green Hornet is in full stride and yet both make the same shadow on the ground.

No two ways about it. Whoever Bill Ely was, his skills were well above that of the average strip artist at the time. The attention to detail is phenomenal, with the background of the 2nd panel reminding me of what Leonard Starr did so often on Mary Perkins On Stage, and the inking giving the finished product such a nice, slick look!
