DescriptionA Bruce McCorkindale re-creation of Curt Swan and George Klein's cover art to SUPERMAN ANNUAL #7. Pen, brush, ink, and mixed media on 13" X 20" Bristol board. Bruce commented, "I enjoyed working with the ink washes - I've mostly been using watercolors lately, so this was a fun change-up!"This issue came out just shortly before I was buying comics, but a kid down the street had copies of comics with ads for the issue and I always wished I had a copy (until I finally got one years later). I still think of the central image that Swan did here as one of the most noble and majestic images of Superman ever drawn. It was originally done for an Distributor's award as The Independent News Co., Inc. Initiative Award "Celebrating the Spirit of America" and then was placed as a natural centre to the Silver Anniversary celebration. Quoting from page 112 of Eddie Zeno's biography, Curt Swan: A Life in Comics, Arlen Schumer observed, "Of all the recurrent imagery in Curt Swan's Superman family career, it is finally the statues, monuments, and memorials that are the most revealing of Swan's nature, for they show an artist whose style mirrored his name -- that of a swan itself, graceful and dignified, yet strong and resolute, permeated with an air of solemnity. They are utterly heroic models, some of the most iconic in the history of comics." Although not designated as a grey tone cover as such by Overstreet, this remarkable piece was created using a similar rendering technique. Since the final image was that of a metallic statue, no other colors were needed atop this tonal rendering. Social/Sharing |

A very polished and realistic tonal shaded statue image that contrasted with the more cartoony classic images from the stories within. McCorkindale does both styles very well. Famous amongst comic art collectors who've seen the statue image by itself get turned into something resembling this image.
