What immediately stands out about the cover to Uncanny X‑Men #98 is its sense of shock and velocity. Dave Cockrum composes the scene as if the viewer has arrived one second too late — the battle has already erupted, and the team is fully engulfed. Every element on the page carries movement, impact, and consequence, giving the piece a cinematic weight that was uncommon in superhero covers of the mid‑1970s.

Cockrum’s gift was his ability to make a team book feel genuinely multi‑threaded. Rather than isolating characters for clarity, he lets their actions collide and overlap in a way that mirrors the chaos of the moment. That design choice is what gives this cover its pulse. And importantly, this piece comes from Cockrum’s first tenure on the title — the run that redefined the X‑Men and remains the most sought‑after period of his work. His later return to the book is respected, but it was this initial stretch that set the tone, the style, and the mythology that would define the franchise for decades.

Cockrum freezes several simultaneous collisions without losing control of the moment.
Colossus has just been swatted aside by the Sentinel Storm is attacking, his armored form thrown backward in a twisting fall that anchors the foreground. Cyclops is pinned in another Sentinel’s grip, held tight across the chest while still managing to fire a sharp, horizontal optic blast across the page. Above them, Storm drives a bolt of lightning downward, her figure angled with precision as her energy rips through the battlefield. To the right, Wolverine leaps upward in a fierce counterstrike, claws slicing directly into the Sentinel’s head with brute force. And along the left face of the building, Nightcrawler clings to the vertical surface, balanced and ready, maintaining his acrobatic poise as the battle unfolds. The composition is dense, but never muddled — every figure is placed with intention.

Historically, issue #98 marks a meaningful turning point. The Sentinels’ return reconnects the nascent “All‑New, All‑Different” lineup to the earliest wounds of X‑Men history. Cockrum understood the weight of that moment, and the cover reflects it — the new team isn’t just facing a threat; they’re confronting a legacy. This clash helped cement the tone that would define the Claremont/Cockrum era and propel the title toward its eventual dominance.

Original Cockrum covers from this first run are highly coveted, and pieces that present the full team in active conflict are even more scarce. This artwork captures everything that made the mid‑’70s run explosive: the scale, the choreography, the immediacy, and the sense that the X‑Men were evolving into something far larger than their Silver Age beginnings.

Amazing cover!
