DescriptionSome CAF surfing over the holidays led to discovering this absolute beauty being added to my collection recently. This is the closing page from Justice League: The New Frontier Special, Darwyn Cooke’s capstone story that closed the book on his signature work, The New Frontier (published in six issues released in 2003-2004). In The New Frontier, Cooke was given the freedom to break editorial barriers and tell a uniquely interwoven and more mature, evolved story incorporating a broad swath of DC heroes over time. The New Frontier Special was published four years later (Mar 2008) to coincide with the release of the animated adaptation of The New Frontier. It incorporated three stories, the first written by Darwyn Cooke and focused on the rivalry between Batman & Superman that is implied in the original series. At the time of its creation, Cooke had ‘made a pretty firm decision that, in terms of comic books, I was going to leave The New Frontier to stand alone’. But he decided to tell one more New Frontier story and this is the final page from that capstone work. A signature image of DC’s Big Three with Wonder Woman front and center – yowzah! This final page has had one prior owner – collector Shannon Wendlick. Back when The New Frontier Special came out, Shannon had won a Hero Initiative auction for breakfast with Darwyn and a sketch. Before the breakfast, a good friend of Shannon’s had seen the art Darwyn would be making available for the show and let Darwyn know his breakfast attendee would also want to buy this piece. Amazingly, Darwyn came to breakfast with it! Darwyn had only one caveat - he did not want to do the sketch that came with the auction at breakfast. He just wanted to be able to sit and talk and have a conversation – but he promised Shannon at the next con they both attended that he would then deliver the auction sketch. Shannon tells of an awesome breakfast, great conversation, and an overall great experience. And at the next San Diego Comic-Con, Shannon was given an amazing Wonder Woman sketch. From that point on until Darwyn’s passing, Shannon would always be sure to find Darwyn at cons and was greeted as a friend. A fun backstory to this page, reflective of both former owner and creator! I was super fortunate to be the caretaker of this piece for 15 years. It will be truly missed but I feel it found a great new home.

Fabulous write-up and fabulous art. Darwyn Cooke was one of those rare talents who really captured the spirit of optimism exemplified by those early DC heroes. I remember the first time I read New Frontier, I was really moved by Darwyn's ability to channel the Golden Age spirit of the big three. This art really captures that optimisim perfectly!

This is the image Darwyn wanted to leave us with from this series. It encapsulates what he wanted to say about this era of the heroes that was so formative to him and the hope that the dawn of the silver age would bring. A class act all the way to his fans.

I could not agree more with your first sentence, Marcus; a capstone image from a capstone story!

Fabulous iconic pose with the Trinity, capturing everything about NF you'd want. I remember being more than a little green when Shannon got this. I'm green again. A towering acquisition Mr K.

Got a hopeful vibe, with WW's smile, but also because you get a sense it'll all be alright as the Trinity here is on top of things! Also cool that you got stern Supes and ever brooding Bats :) Killer Cooke catch, Chris, congrats!

Loved Darwyn's New Frontier miniseries, and this image perfectly captures the spirit and tone that he brought to the books. Always loved this page, so congrats on picking it up! And thanks for sharing the backstory on this piece too!
