Description

Alfredo Alcala had an incredible career long before his first appearance in American comics. This page was published in 1963 as part of his World War II tale of the Japanese battleship Yamato. A ship that was a titan of it's day. The heaviest and most powerfully armed battleship ever constructed. Designed to counter the numeric superiority of the US Naval fleet.

Alcala had a great appreciation of history and had a documented experience living through war. All of that came through during this "Battle of Midway" series which ran inside Redondo Komiks issues #6-20.

The art is trademark Alfredo work with glorious inking and lush backgrounds. I was a bit suprised to see the inclusion of zip-a-tone screens on this page. Reading the English translation of this dialogue it made sense. Panel 3 features diagonal screen to simulate driving rain the Yamato is passing though. Panel five has a more obstructive horizontal screen. It is placed to simulate the even denser fog hiding the fleet.

I enjoy the varied panels on this page. Starting with a fantastic estabishing shot and moving to the featured soldiers of each side of the conflict. All handled perfectly by Alcala in his classic style. The slight toning only adds to the history of this piece. Very grateful to add this into my collection.

Thanks Steve!

Do not know why, but I keep thinking that Mark Schultz would love that first panel as much as I do.

Some great illustrations on this page, though my favorite is that third one with the screentone and wave effects.  Congrats on the pickup!

I was embarrassed to find that I haven't left a CAF comment on the page, despite seeing it up close on two occasions. It's wonderful. Not only is the inking amazing, so are the storytelling, figures, and use of zip-a-tone screens. His clouds give the sky substance and presence. As is key in the war comic genre, he's got the details of the equipment, ships, and planes right as far as I can tell. I particularly like how he made the Japanese radio operators distinct individuals. A wonderful addition to your collection.
