Description
'Try the Spindrift'

Another one of Cass's increasingly unfocused mystical journeys, courtesy of Alan Grant and a bevy of new-ish artists, with experimental styles to match the 'experimental' (i.e. drug-addled) text.

Of these artists, Tony Luke was one of the oddest OR most innovative, depending on your perspective, maaaan. He had been working with 2000AD since 1987 when he produced the quite frankly insane Nemesis The Warlock photo-story for the Summer Sci-Fi Special. His experiments continued, resulting in his work on the solo Judge Anderson strip for the Megazine. In a home-made low-fi precursor to Photoshop, Luke photographed his then girl friend, and then painted over the photos with collage elements to create the story characters. Not entirely successful, but a fascinating period of experiment in British comics at a time when the need for content had started to outpace those able to produce it...

Note that the collaged photos were scanned then printed, and then the lettering acetate added; it would not be able to lie flat over the original image.

Tony died in 2016, after battling mesothelioma cancer for over a decade. A fixture of the Brighton psycho-goth scene, he was a one off, never to be repeated. Here's his obit from Down The Tubes.

It's strips like these that made 2000 AD & the Megazine the best European comic publication well into the mid-90s (Metal Hurlant ceased publication in 1987). "Be afraid, be very afraid" were the opening lines of his XX Nemesis - Deathbringer video. Thank you for posting.

Great collage work to achieve the surrealism of the story.  Tony Luke's painted colors are just as hypnotic with hits of airbrush to enhance the glow.
