Description

A beautiful SOL KORBY illustration for "Luce and His Empire" by W.A. Swanberg and published by Dell in 1973. Korby is an extremely talented and highly underrated illustrator who studied with Frank Reilly (also taught another great paperback cover artist- the legendary James Bama!). His oil technique and the detail on this painting are absolutely incredible, and I love his subtle use of color on Luce. I was introduced by Korby's work as a kid through a book called "The Virginian"... a book that stood out from my other children's books on my bookshelf because of its dramatic cover!

Wow, the book was awarded the Pulitzer in 1973 and this cover painting captures the photographic likeness of Henry Luce and his influences and those he shaped the perceptions of as a publishing magnate.
