DescriptionAny character can be interesting, given the right concept and creative team. "Ray Palmer as John Carter" was a bold choice, especially for the early 1980s, when barbarians were falling out of fashion under the weight of Star Wars. But Gil Kane was the guy to make it work. At this point in the story, the Atom has escaped a gladiatorial arena in the company of a rebel leader and the daughter of the evil emperor. He must prove his bona fides to a suspicious lieutenant who wields a poisoned arrow like a spear. Markers and felt pens from this era infamously faded through oxidization, even when stored in the dark. This page has held up surprisingly well. Kane's confident, long lines make me wonder whether there was even a pencil layout underneath in the first place; perhaps he referenced thumbnails on another sheet, or maybe just winged it, seasoned pro that he was by this point. The first thing that comes to mind for me in Kane's style is his penchant for up-the-nostrils head poses. This page has none of those, opting instead for nonstop action choreography. As with most pages of its era, the corners were cut off in the process of photographing the page for publication. Panel 2 originally had a full border, but most of it was whited out. The concept also plays to Kane's strengths of showing dynamic anatomy in page battle sequences like this page! This shows the full range of it!

This action sequence is superb, even by Kane's standards. And yes, the concept of melding ERB fantasy with Silver Age superheroics was a nice twist.
