The previous owner was 12 years old when she bought this piece at a local comic expo and personally had Tim Vigil sign it that second time in 1989. (Whether she bought it from Tim himself or another vendor is unclear.) She had this piece for 35 years thinking that it was Wolverine mutilating the Caped Crusaders. It’s actually ultra violent pioneer Faust establishing his turf.

But in 1987, there was no Faust. Not one that had been shown to the public, anyway.

Faust’s publishing history is a mess. There were a lot of variants, and a lot of “premier editions,” at least one of which was actually a reprint, itself called the “premier edition.” The author of this article seems to have figured it out: https://sewermutant.com/wave-of-mutilation-part-2-the-birth-of-faust-c2d9ed6ab2c9. Faust first appeared in the Northstar reprint of Omega #1, which was sold at the Chicago Comic Con July 1-3 in 1988.

Did Tim Vigil draw Faust for a fan before Faust officially debuted? I figured only Tim Vigil would know for sure.

So I contacted Tim through social media and he graciously agreed to take a look at the drawing. He didn’t fully recall the circumstances, but guessed that he drew this while working on the first issue in 1987.
