Description

This has taken me nearly a month because I was trying to figure out the mechanics of the thing. Here we have the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, walking away from his downed Tie Fighter ready for battle. In the comic, it's Luke that collides with Vader in space with his X-Wing Starfighter and both crash on the planet below. I wanted to show some battle damage on Vader through that single cracked lens. The yellowish-red pupil of Anakin Skywalker beneath, shrouded in darkness, is meant to convey his pain and anguish and, of course, the Dark Side he's channeling through both. The helmet itself was a challenge because of its reflective surface. Since the sky of that planet is blue-green, I chose a darker palette to reflect it on the cranium and "cheek bone" of the helmet. I applied the same logic to his drawn lightsaber. The shadows I applied to the helmet were meant to bridge the gap between the technological and the organic. Vader is now a cornered animal, and we all know how dangerous that situation can be. The smoke trail in the sky is meant to indicate Luke's ship crashing in the opposite direction. (Spoiler: he lives.) Aside from the two ships coming in to view from the right, those tiny dots on the ridge of that mountain are meant to be rebel forces, which quickly converge on Vader in the comic. I wanted to keep the background players very simple because the main draw is Anakin Skywalker himself. You can find this mixed media piece in my "Art for Sale" gallery very soon.
