DescriptionIllustration for Britannia & Eve Magazine (1915-25)Fortunino Matania was born in Naples (april 16 1881) and was a renowned Illustrator known for his drawings of major events the coronation of Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth. he also covered the sinking of the Titanic and his illustrations during World War 1. after the war he switched to illustrations of Ancient Rome. I am very happy to have finally be able to add one of his illustrations to my collection. his detail is amazing and each piece he masterfully captures a moment of history.Social/Sharing |

Matania never skimped on the details of his illustrations. Be it gesture, expression, texture, contrast or design. Every element reveals something about the period depicted and solidifies the overall composition. To think such brilliance was exhibited with piece after piece, week after week for many decades is astonishing. A true master of illustration!

100% right. He did a weekly magazine. It's astonishing he could keep the quality at such high standards.

Men Without Hats originated in Montreal and Safety Dance was a wordlwide hit that went to #3 in the United States. That makes this illustration truly fantastic!

Thank you. Yeah very pleased with the two classical pieces I have, especially the boat battle in the colloseum. When I was young I remember reading a book about the gladitorial goings on by Daniel Mannix, "For those about to Die". A great book, and the cover always impressed me and stuck with me for decades, then later I found out it was Matania. A few years ago I was lucky to view this original piece in the studio of a famous artist who I had gone to visit. He told me Matania was a big inspiration to him.
