Description
Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi #1 Pg. 3 Color Guide

Original Colorists: Christie Scheele and Bob Sharen
Pencils by Al Williamson
Inks by Carlos Garzon
Lettered by Ed King
Written by Archie Goodwin

This one's interesting because I don't 100% know whether this was the color guide for the original Marvel Comics series of the movie adaptation or if it was from the later published reprint (Classic Star Wars Return Of The Jedi) by Dark Horse Comics, which had new colors done for updated publishing purposes. I bought these from my buddy Jeff Wedding awhile back and that's the extent of the info he had as well. Haven't seen any other color guides from the title out there either.

If you happen to know any more info/details/context on these color guides, please let me know but either way super happy to have this in the collection. Would love to find (and afford) an Al Williamson and Carlos Garzon penciled and inked page from this adaptation eventually, but that's easier said than done these days.

I'm pretty selective when it comes to Color Guides and it's usually this sort of situation where finding an OA page is either impossible to find or impossible to afford.

See the additional images section for a separate Black and White color reference sheet that comes along with this piece/color guide, as well as 2 separate scans of the published page, one from the original Marvel comic and another from the Dark Horse reprint.

From my weak "eyeballing it style" 1 to 1 comparison, to me it looks more representative of the original Marvel series than the Dark Horse reprint, so that's how I've titled and credited this for the CAF post. But if I am mistaken, I am happy to adjust it.

Enjoy the rest of Star Wars Month! I have spoken.

Similarly, I originally picked it up as an affordable alternative to an original Williamson page. And I never could find any definitive info one way or the other as to what era. I'd be interested to see if anyone else knows. So I'll be keeping tabs on your comments here to see if anyone knows.

When I look at both published page scans (comparing the original Marvel book to the Dark Horse reprint) its much more closer to the original Marvel series than the Dark Horse one to me. Take a look at that 4th inlet panel especially with Commander Jerjerrod, the original series and the color guide both have that hint of yellow coloring in the lapel section of his Imperial Army suit. That color is absent in the Dark Horse reprint...I'm sure there are other subtlties too but that's the one where I was like, OK, I'm just gonna roll ahead with this as being from the original until proven otherwise. Haha. And thanks again man for passing this on from your collection to mine

While it doesn't appear to have 4 decades worth of age to it, it DOES in fact match up to the coloring of the original Marvel printing. Either way, it's got beautiful content with what is in my opinion the best art Star Wars has ever had, so just enjoy it as the unique piece of Star Wars comics book history that it is!

Glad someone else's eyes match my take on it! I give credit to Jeff's archival techniques on why the page hasn't aged as old as it is but I'm sure it had an interesting journey before then to end up in our portfolios in general. I agree, ROTJ some of the best ever if not the best Star Wars comic art ever published.

Right here, right now
I put the color out
I don't wanna chase you down
I know you’d seen it
You run Christie
Bob Sharen cuts to Scheele
Out with the pleasantries and all for Sheev in
So trade that schedule for something colorful
Al has it crazy, live a Marvel crazy
You can play with the Rebels, this thing’s operational
Or you can risk Endor and see

Don't you wanna get away from the Star Wars art you gotta pay
'Cause Ewok’s what you need, so come with me and take Jedi
It'll take you to the color guide
'Cause Lucas do like you do
Or you can Palpatine
Stay in the page, or you'll finally Tattooine
Oh, damn, suddenly you're free Jedi
Sith'll take you to the color guide

It's sometimes easy to forget how good the art was on this mini.  I rembet coming through the airport one time (more than 20.years back and the guy who looks through your luggage was excited I was coming from comicxon and told me he had some comics. Specifically the return of the Jedi comics and was wondering what they were worth.   Any rate..congrats on this nice looking. Color piece
