Description
I was checking out Heritage Auctions today, and notice 6 Wilson covers for sale! That's more than I've seen all year. As of yesterday, no pictures, but I found pictures of the comics so I could know what to expect. I thought. Then they came up tonight. My glee turned to sadness and disappointment. March of Comics #328, an old Lost in Space cover that harkens back to what made them so good, was almost devoid of the vibrant colors Mr. Wilson had used to paint this cover in. I expected it to be even better than the comic cover, by far, as the March of Comics used rather cheap paper. Unfortunately, just the opposite. Totally washed out cover due to being left in the sun. Even in a dark room the sun will kill all of Mr. Wilson's vibrant purples and greens. Then on to Magnus Robot Fighter #8. Another washed out cover. More sun fade. All the dynamics of a cover that one time must have been stupendous, now frankly cannot hold a candle to the comic cover. So sad. And Heritage says these are in excellent condition. Yes, if you don't count that they have lost 50% of their colors. Then on to The Mighty Samson #9, a cover I have never seen before. It is not posted yet, but it must be pretty bad. Ok, it is now up. Unfortunately, I was right. The beautiful greens are ALL gone. It is just a washed out bright yellow painting. Even Heritage acknowledges the beating it took from being framed and left in the sun. They call it "being sunstruck." At least they acknowledged how bad the washed out appearance of this one is. #1 of Space Family Robinson has substantial color fade, as noted by Heritage also, and my favorite, one of the linchpins showing George Wilson's talents, King Kong, seems the least affected by sunstruck issues, but is present. Only the Tarzan seems to be as it should be. As you can see on these last three that are still vibrant, not many vibrant purples and Greens, especially the King Kong. Please, please, please if you have a George Wilson in any room in a frame, take it down. I beg of you. Once these are gone, they can't be brought back, and there is only one of each of these. And if the owner of these wants me to take down these descriptions I will do so. My point is not cast dispersions at the art per se, but to beg everyone reading this to protect Wilson's work, and to show what happens if you don't. I know it's your art, but in a way it kind of belongs to everyone. When you buy something so special and precious I believe we have a duty to protect it for those that come behind us. I did edit this post as I missed some of the imperfectons of the Space Family Robinson and King Kong art. Sorry for any confusion.
Sound advice! Maybe they weren't as valued as they are today which may be the reason they were left exposed to the UV rays. So even if you have less valuable paintings now, they should be preserved.
