DescriptionStingray by Daniel Warren Johnson - 9x12Where to begin with this one... DWJ's composition is always interesting and this is no exception. To take the "star" of the piece, the focus of the commission and relegate him to the bottom left corner, blending into the seaweed and/or coral is a bold choice. But it kind of makes sense. As we "read" the piece from left to right, we begin with Stingray. Our eye follows his body up and then is drawn by his arms and head to the orca and then into the rest of the image and, if you follow the whales, they lead you back around. Rather than having Stingray facing the camera in a typical super hero pose so that we can clearly see the trademark sunburst on the chest and the downward facing arrow on the face, he is presented in profile. The bowed head and the hands gently touching the orca show Stingray's empathy toward the creature and imbue the piece with an emotional depth that you just don't see in many commissions. Lastly, I showed this piece to a friend who commented, "That orca is like a cat giving head boops!" From that time on, I have been unable to get the phrase "orca boops" out of my head. DWJ is a storyteller first and this is as much a story as it is a pin up commission.

For all his well-deserved reputation as a master of explosive action and page-melting intensity, he certainly doesn't steer clear of quiet, emotional moments. A piece like this one feels -way- more special and intense than a typical hero shot action pose. Really fantastic execution! Congrats, Newell!
