DescriptionIf you ask any sports fan (especially in the SF bay area) about “The Catch”, they would probably start talking about the incredible Joe Montana to Dwight Clark play in the 1982 NFC Championship game that propelled the 49ers to their first Super Bowl. But for those who have a little more gray in their hair, you might get a different answer. Another almost impossible (but no less super human) catch that occurred almost 30 years earlier in the 1954 World Series. I was not alive to see that incredible feat. And now, sadly, neither is the man who did it. Very, very, few athletes' names are synonymous with their sports. It takes a lot to become a symbol of something bigger than any one person. But Willie Howard Mays Jr did. I probably don’t have enough space here to list all his stats, records, and achievements. And I certainly don’t want to waste this space arguing about who would or would not belong on baseball’s Mount Rushmore. So I’ll close by simply stating the obvious. The game of baseball and the world of sports has lost a true legend. A Giant (in more ways than one). Condolences to his family. And may he rest in peace.Social/Sharing |
