DescriptionMartin's dissertation on Prince Rudolf of Austria continues: “Since he was a boy, Rudolf had shown liberal political ideas, in sharp contrast to his father's conservative ones. He was against the alliance between Austria and Germany, and preferred to walk in British and French circles. "Furthermore, like his mother before him, Rudolf sympathized with Hungary and the independence cause of those who wanted to break away from the Holy Roman Empire. He also worked to improve the economic, political and social conditions of the Magyar people, thus earning the respect of many local leaders, who even asked him to assume the crown of their country. Rudolf refused, not wanting to create division within the empire and worsen the rift between himself and his father. “Precisely because of their very different ideas, Franz Joseph never entrusted Rudolf with political tasks. However, he had great respect for his son - so much so that, as soon as he was old enough, he sent him all over Europe to represent the Habsburg Empire; Rudolf had diplomatic talent. "Franz Joseph had always intended to decide who would be his son's bride and the future empress. The choice fell on Princess Stefania of Belgium. Sissi would have preferred Rudolf to marry for love and disapproved of that union. She never made it a secret that she did not love her daughter-in-law, whom she considered clumsy. In any case, the young prince, aware of his duties, obeyed his father and the demands of statecraft. At first, he seemed devoted to his young wife...” Ironic that Empress Sissi, whose own mother-in-law disapproved of her, found herself in that same position with her own son. “At first he seemed devoted….” is an ominous beginning to a marriage.
