DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #251, teaming Batman with the Flash, adapted from Rick Leonardi's cover to Vision & Scarlet Witch #2, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.1949 - and Batman is intrigued by a break-in at Bannermain Chemicals, which resulted in the theft of a small amount of chemicals with very little value, while much more valuable material was left untouched. With Rex Tyler, former Bannermain employeee, now the boss of his own company (Tyler Chemicals) overseas on a sales trip, Batman turns for help to another of his Justice Society comrades. Travelling to Keystone City, Batman visits Jay Garrick, who's in the process of setting up Garrick Laboratories, and seeks the chemist's advice on possible uses for the chemicals which had been stolen, thinking that they might form a part of an explosive or other substance which could be used by criminals - but Garrick can see no way in which they could be used for that purpose. Rather, the most likely use for the stolen chemicals is in the manufacture of experimental drugs being tested on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission as a possible cure for radiation poisoning. Alarmed by this - in case criminals are using the drugs to immunise themselves against possible nuclear fallout - Batman contacts the authorities, but is informed that no atomic weapons are missing, so his theory that crooks might have stolen an A-bomb is incorrect. Joining forces with the Flash (Garrick's secret identity), Batman sets off to locate the missing chemicals and find the thieves. The Flash is able to identify additional chemicals which would be needed to complete the experimental drugs, and only one laboratory has stocks of them. Accordingly, the Flash carries Batman at super-speed to this lab - a goverment operation which employs chemists Darrell Dane and Roy Lincoln - but when the heroes arrive, they find the site under attack by two villains, and both Dane and Lincoln (and their co-workers) knocked out! Batman identifies one of the attackers as Professor Radium, from one of his earliest adventures, now wearing the protective suit he had donned when his radioactivity had increased, and the Flash realises that the blue-skinned woman who accompanies the Professor is the Blue Lama, who had clashed with Sargon the Sorceror on several occasions in the previous few years. The heroes charge at Professor Radium and the Blue Lama, but a magical bolt from the latter brings down the ceiling, trapping them - and when they free themselves, both villains have vanished. Reviving Darrell Dane, Batman and the Flash learn that the villains were, as suspected, stealing additional chemicals to concoct a cure for radiation poisoning, and Batman theorises that this must be for use by Professor Radium (who had been suffering that condition in their clash in the early 1940s). Leaving Dane to deal with the other lab workers, Batman borrows a Geiger counter and sets off with the Flash to track the villains down. At super-speed, the two heroes criss-cross the state, and a reading leads them back to Garrick Laboratories, where they find the villains using the lab's equipment! When the Flash charges at Professor Radium, he finds that he is slowed down by the villain's radiation, and is grabbed and held helpless - and when Batman rushes to help, a magical spell also leaves him unable to move. With the heroes as witnesses, the villains explain that they had met on an earlier criminal enterprise, and the Blue Lama had fallen in love with Professor Radium, only discover that he was dying of radiation poisoning. Her magic was able to slow the progress of the disease, but could not cure it - but when the two read about the experimental cure, they decided to steal the drugs needed and make it themselves. Although immobilised, Batman is able to kick over a lab bench, and as the chemicals on it mix, they erupt in a flash, temporarily blinding both villains and freeing the heroes - only for the Flash to speed away! Batman tackles both villains, dodging the magical bolts of the Blue Lama and hurling a lead-lined cloak at Professor Radium, temporarily shielding the Gotham Guardian from his radiation - and the Flash returns, at super-speed, bringing with him Ibis The Invincible, from nearby Fawcett City! Ibis' magic is able to nullify the spells from the Blue Lama, and a gas-pellet from Batman knocks her out, while the Flash speeds around Professor Radium, wrapping him inside the lead-lined cloak with strong steel cables and taking him into captivity. Both will be returned to prison, where a cure for Professor Radium's condition may be found. Next time - Batman teams with another Fawcett hero, on a wartime adventure! Social/Sharing |
