Description
"Batmen" by Sam Glanzman. Fourth and last of four-page story.

The gunners shoot down the rest of the "batmen," which the story explains is Navy slang for kamikaze pilots.

The USS Stevens is unable to find the Japanese submarine and stands down from battle stations.

The story ends with the clarification that the USS Hadley, not the USS Stevens, shot down ten Japanese kamikazes off Okinawa.

I'm surprised that that was slang for kamikaze pilots since Batman was already a popular superhero.

Quick climax to the story with some fire and fury.  Readers would be left guessing why the name change at the end if they didn't know Glanzman's connection to the Stevens.
