DescriptionSigned by Joe - 1930s There is considerable speculation on this one.I believe it may be the mock up for Superman prior to Action 1. I shared this thought with my old friend, and source for 40 years historian Roger Hill that I think it could be Shuster, and so he showed it to a Superman friend of his who said that it is beyond Shuster's capability, Roger said he thought Shuster could do it if he wanted to. Another historian publisher who published Shuster's adult material recently says it's "Shuster's technique". (Only a handful of artists who employed pencil shading to ink). And so the question is, is the picture of a meteor shower or is it of an exploding planet thrusting the ship forward. (Remember this was before the final Superman story in Action 1). (see panel 1) also the name WALT appears on the back, (Walt Dennis was the model for Clark Kent and a friend who met Siegel and Shuster in their Sci Fi club. The art is the size of a Golden Age Comic. I also believe this may have been the art that inspired the Superman logo as the perspective nearly matches the "debris" see pic 2 (with fantasy DC logo) The art is also confirmed to be by a left handed artist. Shuster was heavily inspired by Frank R. Paul and Buck Rogers. When Superman was rejected by one Newspaper editor, the reason was "we don't need another Buck Rogers strip" and Shuster threw it in the trash. ( food for thought ) Nuts! lolSocial/Sharing |

Very nice illo from a golden era of sci fi! The ship design is like a airliner and rocket in one in a race to escape this meteor strike. Joe has the skills!
