DescriptionTransformer Optimus Prime by Andrew GriffithThe end of 2023 was kinda rough for me. One of the comics that got me through was Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers, which captures the incredible action and heart that DWJ brings to his projects, it also got me going back and rediscovering Transformers as a whole. Which prior to that I was mainly familiar with due to the Michael Bay movies. My deep dive has had me exploring the IDW comics, Transformers Prime Animated Series and more. Daniel Warren Johnson is showing he is a once in a generation talent masterfully blending kinetic action with moments of poignant, beauty and tragedy. His current project, a re-launch of transformers has instilled a book that could easily become a nostalgic cash grab into something more. In the opening of its second issue, Optimus accidentally takes the life of a deer. You see this hardened war hero and Huling machine devastated by the taking of this wooden creatures life regardless of how familiar you are with the property this two page sequence tells you everything that you need to know about the character. DWJ has spoken in interviews about how he fought with Hasbro to include this scene to show why Optimus fights to protect humanity for me. This was the moment in the series that Transformers became Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers. Andrew Griffith did some fantastic work on the IDW Transformers series and I thought it would be really cool to see him interpret Optimus prime with Megatron‘s arm from DWJ‘s Transformers run this was an absolute blast. Really dig how this turned out. Social/Sharing |

I like that there's worn battle damage and not the shiny perfection that was in the Dreamwave era. It shows that war weighs on Optimus and nothing is ever clean and smooth about combat.

Yeah, dig the craggy, chippy, battle damage here, with Optimus standing over his defeated foe. Or foes! Congrats!
