DescriptionThe Krakoa era brought forward movement to many X-characters. Kitty Pryde finally adopted the grown-up name Kate, as Chris Claremont had predicted forty years ago back in UXM #139. As the Red Queen, she led the Marauders on a pirate space ship, in a callback to "Kitty's Fairy Tale" in UXM #153. a swashbuckling bedtime story which Kitty told to pre-limbo Illyana. Artist Dave Cockrum was a big fan of Errol Flynn and the whole pirate genre. I met Myles Wohl at OAX 2024 and commissioned him to portray either Spiral or Kitty Pryde as he wished. He chose Kate in her Red Queen persona, in a traditional pirate setting, accompanied by her trusty sidekick Lockheed the dragon. Wohl said he particularly enjoyed rendering the deck dressing like the barrels and ropes. It's clear skies for sailing, but Kate and Lockheed appear to be responding to some threat that has appeared on deck. Wohl subtly imbedded his initials in one of the barrels. This piece also called for a more ornate frame than I usually request, including an old timey distressed gold outer rim, red cloth mat, and an inner gold braid rim, suggesting the wealth of Orchis booty to which Kate might lead her Marauders. Very cool and in an old colonial uniform as well. The setting makes it look like she's back in those times.
