Description
Sometimes misunderstandings lead to wonderful things. Take my Grendel commission with Nir Levie. I love Nir's work and always amazed at it's complexity and inspiring back stories of what influences each image. Since I love Matt Wagner's Grendel, I requested his version.

Nir thought I meant Grendel from the Beowulf story which, honestly, is an inspired commission request. I read both Beowulf and John Gardner's Grendel in college and loved them. Nir said he was influenced by the hairless chimp (pictured below) a terrifying image indeed and perfectly inciting the terror of a monster. His details of the trophies he keeps as jewelry, his face, the footsteps on the ground, all add to the emotion and propel the kinetic nature of this work.

Nir also created a color version which I've added below, again, inspired color choices that accentuate the feeling of seeing this monster in action.

Gorgeous piece! It might not have been what you intended originally but Nir knocked this out of the park!

Nir is teaching humanities classes of western civilization with these pices that look like they come out of an ancient world of artisans!

at first i thought it may have been a planet of the apes concept but Beowulf's Grendel and the inspiration piece he drew from it all makes sense now. happy accident! Nir's art is on the edges of sublime and only getting better. congrats!

A (Hunter) Rose by any other name would still smell just as sweet. As one who's also experienced a commission misinterpretation, I do empathize. Though I do sincerely believe this is the single greatest depiction of Beowulfs Grendel I've ever seen!

Proof that Nir can draw anything! Even if the wires were crossed, the finished result is awesome! Great use of contrast here and he works that detail into everything he does. I especially like the skulls, but I'm a sucker for skulls.

Colors are great but the B&W art...the mostly black figure with the white linework..sublime stuff!  Congrats!
