DescriptionAn elderly Japanese man in a stylish suit, thinking I was Jim Cheung, walked up to me, extended his hand, and said in fairly natural English, "Hello, nice to meet you. I'm the man who invented tentacle sex." And that was how I met Toshio Maeda. Why did Maeda-san think I was Jim Cheung? That story's not so interesting. It's a "Six Degrees of Yoshi" story. Basically, my friend Yoshi, who has connections with nearly everybody, got Jim to come over to Japan for one of his comic art shows and asked me to help Jim run his table. He also got Maeda-san to visit. So, it was all a matter of timing. Maeda-san, who read American comics in his youth, wanted to introduce himself to a visiting fellow comic artist. However, when Maeda-san entered the room, Jim had left the table to stretch his legs and left me to look after things, and, because he didn't know what Jim looked like... "Hello, nice to meet you. I'm the man who invented tentacle sex." Speaking of tentacle sex, I first became aware of Maeda's work when I rented a VHS copy of Urotsukidoji (AKA Legend of the Overfiend). I took it home, started watching it, and was (I believe the word is) gobsmacked. Tentacle sex, indeed! I cannot say I've ever been a big fan of Maeda-san's manga. I have sneaked a peek or two at his work and admire his artistic acumen, but his stories are not my cup of green tea. Still, some guy on eBay started selling pages from the 1988 series, Chōjū Densetsu (超獣伝説/Legend of the Superbeast), and this one contained PG-rated content, looked cool, and, was, relatively, cheap, so I put in a bid and won. Thus, gentle reader, I can post this page and tell you this story. You're welcome. Social/Sharing |

As someone who has gone through so many cases of mistaken identity that I keep in touch with someone just so I can contact them to verify one of the more outlandish incidents when people doubt it, I appreciate the story you shared.

even without knowing much (or anything) about the content this is a really cool looking Manga page. And a great story about your interaction with the creator, thanks for sharing and congrats on getting the art!

It looks like GI Joe comics with the hovercraft! Although the presence of ocean water could potentially yield tentacled creatures. I can't wait for Jim Cheung to be influenced by Maeda and begin the tentacle period of his career.

That hovercraft image is beautiful, but not as beautiful as the story that comes with it! By the way, Tim, over on this side of the Pacific, we call it Tentacle Porn. Kudos on the nice page acquisition!

Great story and great art! What a curious way to meet Toshio Maeda, I'm sure it was interesting to meet him first and then get a chance to pick up his art later on. We don't get a lot of manga art posted here on CAF, so it's always interesting when we do. I love this page of art from Toshio Maeda. What a cool hovercraft! When I first saw it, I thought it might be a page from GI Combat or some other war comic, but then I noticed the bottom panel and clearly it wasn't what I thought. Love the use of screen tones on this page. And the contrast between the tech-oriented top panel and the line art on the bottom panel is interesting. Thanks for the amusing story and the beautiful art!

Great page and story! I like the water spray to convey movement and the zipatone to add texture to the craft. Cool!
